Description

Egypt's popular revolution that ousted Western-backed Hosni Mubarak from the country's presidency is worrying Israel and to a lesser extent, the United States, but the Palestinians believe a new government in Cairo is likely to help them end their divisions, two analysts wrote in the Beirut-based influential daily newspaper AN NAHAR last week. Mubarak, 82, stepped down on Feb. 11, 30 years after his election as Egypt's president to succeed his slain predecessor, Anwar Sadat. Mubarak handed over power to the country's military after 18 days of widespread anti-government protests. The army promised to make constitutional reforms and hand back power to an elected government within six months. Less than a month before Mubarak's resignation, Tunisia's Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled his country after serving 23 years as president. He was also ousted by a popular revolution. Similar popular moves are taking place in Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Bahrain, Algeria and Jordan. "US Jewish leaders believe ongoing revolutionary changes in the Arab world may pose existential threats to Israel. However, they think this threat will depend on the way the Jewish state deals with it. With (rightwing Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu in office, they think Israel's chances to eschew this threat are meager," Sarkis Naoum wrote in AN NAHAR on Feb. 12. "With their unwise policies, Netanyahu and his government have proven that Zionism could be racist, although it is not originally like that, the leaders believe," he added without naming the leaders. They cited many examples of Israel's "unwise" policies, including its obstruction of the creation of a Palestinian state and its adoption of a strategy that is very similar to South Africa's defunct apartheid.
