Description

Dr. Mohammed ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, has become the people's champion in Egypt on account of his campaign for sweeping political reform ahead of next year's presidential election. ElBaradei, a longtime critic of Egypt's repressive political system, does not have a political party behind him, but for now at least, he's the man Egyptians are counting on to bring about long-awaited meaningful political change. The emergence of ElBaradei, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for the IAEA's efforts to curb nuclear proliferation, is clearly making the regime uneasy. President Hosni Mubarak, seeking to dismiss ElBaradei as a minor irritant, said "if he wants to run as an independent, he's welcome" so long as he fulfils the constitutional requirements. But Egypt's electoral laws make it almost impossible for any candidate to successfully challenge Mubarak, and there's no sign the regime is prepared to changes those rules before the next election. The regime's unease can be seen in the security services' efforts to isolate ElBaradei as they warned his growing number of supporters to stay away from Cairo International Airport upon his return on 19 February. However, up to 1,000, mainly young, supporters showed up, defying the government order. His supporters called on the 67-year-old diplomat and scholar to take on one of the world's longest running authoritarian regimes in next year's poll. Many held posters reading: "Yes! ElBaradei President of Egypt."
