For 30 years, director Atom Egoyan has been making personal, independent films that seem like unruly exercises in growing up--a textbook for learning about adulthood, as it were. I always think of Egoyan's men and women as kids playing house. I also think of some of his movies as exercises in pretension. Egoyan, who lives in Toronto, enjoys making films about sex. Not sex films, mind you, but melodramas about folks who draw their identity from their sexual encounters, or lack thereof. His characters are often hung up on sex or have peculiar notions about it. He seems to view sex as something mythical, or perhaps even mystical.
